Knee: Osteotomy of the knee
The aim of osteotomy is to transfer the joint load from the overloaded part to the healthy one by cutting the bone and correcting the limb axis.
Osteotomy is X-ray monitor controlled surgical cutting together with a correction of the axis of the limb. Knee osteotomy can be performed within the femoral region, in valgus knees, or tibial, in varus knees. After cutting the bones a pre-planned limb axis correction is performed, based on radiological images. Osteotomy is stabilised with metal implants, allowing for the fusion of fragments.
